Detangling Harassment explores the nuanced understanding and effective management of online harassment faced by journalists reporting on queer African lives. Drawing from the instructor’s firsthand experiences covering LGBTQ+ stories in Nigeria and Uganda, as well as their role as the founder of Minority Africa, a media organization dedicated to similar coverage, this multimedia course offers a comprehensive blend of video, audio, and text components. The course examines the evolution of online harassment within the media industry, looks at the specific challenges encountered while reporting on LGBTQ+ rights across African countries, and provides practical strategies for addressing and mitigating harassment through firsthand experiences from journalists. It is structured into four modules over four weeks for a total of 2.5 hours. Students who enroll in the course will engage with compelling storytelling, expert interviews, and real-life case studies to deepen their understanding and equip themselves with effective coping mechanisms.
